Shining Light on the Stars – the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram
One of the most powerful tools in astrophysics is the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, plotting the actual brightness (absolute magnitude) of stars against their colour (hence their temperature).
This short film describes the Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram in detail, from the history of its creation to the practical use it has for astronomers today.
We begin with the brightest stars as seen from Earth and then travel to some of the closest stars to the Sun, using the H-R diagram to describe them along the way.
